sometimes you read

a news story so horrific

it propels you into

the bedrooms of your

sleeping children

where you listen

in the dark

for their exhalations

stand sentinel over

their inert forms

take in the scent of them

their perfume and

tennis shoe stink

reassure yourself

they still exist
