The Line Between Discretion and a Lie

Broken Road

She Is Gone

Artist Statement: As a painter, I’ve been described as a neo-expressionist. I’m interested in surface textures, multilayered collage and expressive brushwork. These “poem-paintings” were my way of expressing feelings I had trouble writing about during the pandemic: the moral quandaries of Covid testing and travel, strained relationships with extended family and the sudden loss of my mother-in-law.

Alyssa Chase earned her MFA in poetry from Butler University and holds a bachelor’s degree in studio art from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Her hybrid essay “Shell with Halo: A New Orleans East Family Mystery in 13 Parts” was published with her paintings by Flying Island in 2021 and nominated for a Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net. Alyssa’s poetry, including visual poems, has been published in The Indianapolis Review, Alternaverse and The Greensboro Review. Alyssa runs her own freelance writing business and lives in Indianapolis.
