Artist Statement and Bio:
The images are from an ongoing series titled Postcards. Based on the notion that the individual is a world of her own. The work serves as an aesthetic correspondence between the internal and external of (my)self. They are square abstract images of emotional reflections and mental trips that I have failed to translate/transform into words.
Born and raised in Ghana, Jane Akweley Odartey now lives in Queens, NYC. She is a Teaching Artist at the Queens Museum, an artisan for a small indie brand and sole contributor behind the blog JaneThroughtheSeasons.com. Her work has been exhibited at the Sidney Mishkin Gallery in New York, and published/forthcoming in Verita La, Encounters Magazine, Literary Manhattan and elsewhere.
Jane also runs a shop of handmade clothing and accessories, and we felt that upon viewing it, her pieces were their own works of art. See for yourself, and check out some of her work below:
These, as well as other pieces, can be found at: https://www.mawusi.us/store/c12/All.html
What Mawusi is about, in Jane’s words:
I learnt to crochet autodidactically in my favorite tree around the age of nine, growing up in Ghana then taught myself to knit more recently. Apart from designing and crafting for Mawusi, I am a photographer, abstractionist, writer, lifestyle blogger, and an awkward social-introvert with an MA in English Lit. Although I have no formal background in fashion, I have always entertained a passion for style——with emphasis on personal interpretations.
Mawusi is a one woman operated indie brand. All pieces are handmade in small batches, carefully designed and painstakingly made in a pet-free, smoke-free, laughter and good music filled apartment in Queens, New York; where I live with my dearest Mother (whom my brand is named after). Mawusi is crafted in love and patience with every gratitude for life.
Mo chu mi (thank you)
