Welcome to Winter 2026

Hi all,

Thanks so much for contributing and/or reading Indianapolis Review. I’ve said it a hundred times, but I continue to be blown away by the quality of the submissions we receive, and it has been an honor to work on this journal and publish so many fabulous people!

I say this in the past tense because I am currently planning on ‘retiring’ from IR next year, which will be our tenth year. A decade! I do have someone who is planning to take over, don’t worry. Even if that doesn’t work out, I want to keep the archives and website up in perpetuity or as long as possible.

I have been telling people about my plan, so I figured it was time to officially announce it. We currently have the Spring and Summer issues already filled, and I am planning on two special issues after that (stay tuned for a special call in spring) before I step down.

As many of you are editors yourselves or have been in the past, you know the amount of work it takes, and I feel my term of service is up. With raising teenagers, trying to exist in this terrifying country, with the deaths of my stepdad and father, and with middle age health stuff, it is just time that I take a break and focus on my own writing. I know you all understand this.

I am excited for what someone new can do for IR and the places it can go! I am very hopeful for the future.

In the meantime, please enjoy this exquisite Winter Issue. The centerpiece of the issue is my candid conversation with one of my mentors, the poet and translator, Karen Kovacik. Be sure to check that out–we talk about growing up in steel mill country, her new book, how she chose the cover art, our roots in Poland and Polish history, translation, and the behind the scenes of our ‘Pierogi Tour’ poetry reading!

Take care,

Natalie Solmer
